Interim Director Michael Elliott of the National Portrait Museum, London, welcomes the 2025 Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award, saying it is a “pleasure to welcome this annual competition back to the Gallery this year”. Continuing, “The Portrait Award always attracts an exciting and talented group of artists from around the world and I am very much looking forward to seeing it all”.

The Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award 2025 is a major event for portrait painters seeking to highlight and bring focus to portraiture.

Entries for the Award between 22/10/2025 and 14/1/2026 are open to artists aged 18 and over who focus on portraiture in painting.

The Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award 2025, supported by main sponsor Herbert Smith Freehills has a first prize of £35,000, a second prize of £12,000 and a third prize of £10,000. There will also be a Young Artist Award, which will see a prize of £9,000 awarded to a selected entrant, aged between 18 and 30. All artists chosen to exhibit in the 2024 and 2025 Portrait Award exhibitions will be considered for the inaugural Herbert Smith Freehills Artist Commission, which is worth £14,000. The prizes will be announced at the awards ceremony on 8 July 2025.

Artists can submit their painted portraits to the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award via the Gallery’s competition portal at competitions.npg.org.uk
